Cantate BWV 080 - Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott

About this work

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a late version of an earlier cantata that is largely lost. The opening chorale fantasia builds broad counterpoint around a cantus firmus assigned to oboes in unison. Voices enter successively above a bass that is itself divided, giving the movement exceptional density.

The next aria joins soprano and bass with strings in unison, then a bass recitative leads to a spare soprano aria. The central chorale has all voices sing the stanza in unison above the orchestra. A tenor recitative, alto-tenor duet and final harmonisation complete eight movements.

In the opening, rehearse every contrapuntal entry before adding the instrumental cantus firmus. The soprano-bass duet needs common articulation despite its two functions. Seek a flexible collective line in the unison chorale; the alto-tenor duet and final chorale then require transparency rather than emphasis.
