Cantate BWV 085 - Ich bin ein guter Hirt

About this work

Ich bin ein guter Hirt opens without choir: the bass, as the voice of Christ, sings an arioso supported by strings. The alto then receives an aria with a highly mobile obbligato violoncello piccolo. The move from calm authority to chamber writing structures the opening.

The soprano states a chorale stanza reinforced by oboes before the tenor recitative. His following aria joins voice and strings in firmer motion. A four-part chorale finally gathers a course that began with isolated voices.

The bass should carry the arioso through text and line without heaviness. Alto and violoncello piccolo need shared ornaments and breaths. Keep the soprano chorale recognisable beneath its doublings, then retain common diction between it and the final harmonisation.
