Cantate BWV 091 - Gelobet seist du, Jesus Christ

About this work

Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ opens with a Christmas chorale fantasia where horns, timpani, oboes, strings and choir surround the soprano melody. Orchestral interludes broaden the movement without interrupting the cantus firmus. Festivity arises from this superimposition rather than continuous fanfares.

The soprano recitative inserts fragments of chorale into accompanied declamation. A tenor aria brings three oboes forward, then a bass recitative leads to a soprano-alto duet with strings. The final harmonisation restores the opening melody in a more compact form.

In the first movement, establish the cantus firmus before adding orchestral episodes. The soprano must distinguish recitative and chorale quotation, and the tenor breathe with the oboes. Unify both voices’ coloratura in the duet, then keep the final chorale firm without excess volume.
