Cantate BWV 092 - Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn

About this work

Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn develops its hymn across nine movements. In the opening fantasia, the soprano carries the melody above oboes d’amore, strings and highly active vocal counterpoint. This long movement needs continuous direction through its ritornellos.

The bass recitative then quotes the chorale before an alto aria. At the centre, a harmonised stanza is interrupted by recitatives from all four soloists. A bass recitative, tenor aria, further recitative, soprano-alto duet and final chorale multiply ways of hearing the same source.

Identify every hymn quotation before ensemble rehearsal. In the opening, free voices must not mask the soprano, and the alto should listen to the obbligato instrument. The central movement requires clean transitions between chorale and recitative, while the duet renews momentum before the final stanza.
