About this work
Christus, der ist mein Leben gathers several chorale materials within its first movement. Four voices move from harmonisation to tenor recitatives and then another melody supported by oboes, strings and continuo. This sectional form needs clear changes without fragmenting the whole.
A soprano recitative leads to a tenor aria with oboe d’amore. After another recitative, the bass receives an aria with strings, then the alto prepares the final chorale. Hymn quotations continue to organise the cantata beyond its composite opening.
