Cantate BWV 097 - In allen meinen Taten

About this work

In allen meinen Taten retains all nine hymn stanzas and gives them nine distinct movements. The first chorus begins as a French overture, with dotted rhythms followed by a livelier section, while the soprano carries the melody. This architecture immediately places the words within a ceremonial frame.

Following stanzas are distributed among recitatives and arias for bass, tenor, soprano and alto. Solo violin, oboes, strings and continuo change roles in every number. The final chorale returns to collective writing without mechanically summarising the preceding variety.

In the overture, distinguish dotted and lively sections while keeping the cantus firmus stable. Each soloist must know the ritornello and partner instrument. Connect recitatives to their arias, then recover diction shared across all nine stanzas in the chorale.
