Cantate BWV 098 - Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan

About this work

In BWV 98, Bach uses the first stanza of Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan in the opening chorus without a long-note cantus firmus dominating the whole movement. Oboes, strings and voices develop compact writing together. This version therefore differs clearly from the two other cantatas with the same title.

The tenor recitative leads to a soprano aria with obbligato oboe. After a bass recitative, a bass aria with strings closes the work directly. No separate harmonised chorale follows these five movements.

In the chorus, reveal hymn references without seeking an unwritten static line. Soprano and oboe should share breaths. In the final aria, the bass must rely on the strings’ energy and fulfil the closing function without an added slowing.
