Cantate BWV 101 - Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott

About this work

Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott opens with a dark chorale fantasia. The soprano carries the melody reinforced by cornett and trombones, while oboes, strings and lower voices develop an urgent fabric. Chromaticism and dissonance convey supplication without requiring a static tempo.

The tenor aria sets an obbligato violin against the voice, then the soprano recitative quotes the chorale. A bass aria joins three oboes and strings; another recitative leads to a soprano-alto duet with flute and oboe. The final chorale gathers these colours in the last stanza.

In the opening, tune trombone doublings to the voices and prepare every dissonance. Tenor and violin should share articulation, and the bass hear three oboes as an ensemble. Keep both voices clear amid the instruments in the duet before the plain chorale.
