Cantate BWV 102 - Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben

About this work

Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben centres part one upon a large contrapuntal chorus. Oboes, strings and voices develop the text through contrasted sections, from chordal blocks to fugal entries. Tension arises from this architecture and its changing density.

A bass recitative leads to an alto aria with oboe. After the division between both parts, a bass arioso opens the second, followed by a highly mobile tenor aria. An alto recitative and O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß chorale complete seven movements.

Rehearse the first chorus in sections before joining its transitions. The alto should breathe with the oboe, and the bass keep the arioso close to speech. Clarify tenor figures with strings, then prepare the chorale without slowing the preceding recitative too early.
