Es ist euch gut, dass ich hingehe BWV 108 does not begin with a chorus. The bass, representing Christ, opens alone with oboe d’amore and strings; the following tenor aria translates uncertainty into a more agitated line.
After the tenor recitative, the choir appears only in the fourth movement on a sentence from the Gospel. Its firm counterpoint contrasts with the alto aria accompanied by strings and then with the plain final chorale.
Make this delayed move towards the collective audible. The bass should remain authoritative without heaviness, the tenor articulate his figures, and the choir enter with immediately unified diction. The alto aria then restores a more inward space.
