Unser Mund sei voll Lachens BWV 110 opens Christmas with a vast chorus adapted from one of Bach’s orchestral overtures. Trumpets, timpani, oboes, strings and choir turn its dotted rhythm and fast section into vocal splendour.
The tenor aria reduces the forces, a bass recitative refocuses the text, and the alto then sings with oboe d’amore. A soprano-tenor duet precedes a bass aria with trumpet and the final chorale.
The first movement needs orchestral articulation even before the voices enter. Do not let brass obscure consonants. Solo numbers return to a chamber scale; in the bass aria, coordinate voice and trumpet with particular precision.
