Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt BWV 112 treats five stanzas of the Good Shepherd hymn. Two horns give the opening fantasia a luminous breadth while the soprano presents the tune above the lower voices.
The alto dialogues with oboe d’amore in the second stanza. The third becomes a bass recitative, the fourth a soprano-tenor duet with pastoral figures, and the chorale gathers the final stanza.
In the chorus, place the horns around rather than in front of the cantus firmus. The alto aria needs shared breathing with the oboe. Keep imitations light in the duet and let the closing chorale remain direct.
