Cantate BWV 117 - Sei Lob und Ehr dem höchsten Gut

About this work

Sei Lob und Ehr dem höchsten Gut BWV 117 retains all nine hymn stanzas. A large chorus frames the work: its music returns for the final stanza and gives the cantata an unusually symmetrical shape.

Between these pillars come a bass recitative, tenor aria, alto recitative, then bass, soprano and alto arias before a final bass recitative. Each stanza therefore changes voice and accompaniment.

Prepare the tune and character of the framing chorus together so its return does not sound mechanical. In the central span, adjust the scale for every solo. Recitatives should retain clear direction between the arias.
