Cantate BWV 119 - Preise Jerusalem, den Herrn

About this work

Preise, Jerusalem, den Herrn BWV 119 celebrates the inauguration of Leipzig’s town council. The first chorus deploys trumpets, timpani, flutes, oboes and strings in a solemn overture followed by a fast choral section.

Recitatives frame a tenor aria and then an alto aria. A second large, equally public chorus occupies the seventh movement, and a final recitative leads to the closing chorale with the instrumental ensemble.

Treat the two choruses as distinct architectures, not two ceremonial blocks. Brass and timpani must allow the words through. The arias deliberately reduce the scale; restore chamber listening before each collective return.
