Das neugeborne Kindelein BWV 122 gives its chorale fantasia a siciliana sway. The soprano sustains the hymn while lower voices and instruments build a Christmas pastoral around it.
The bass receives an aria with continuo, and the soprano recitative then quotes the chorale. Soprano, alto and tenor join in an animated trio; a bass recitative leads to the final chorale.
The opening should dance without becoming weightless; keep the cantus firmus stable. In the trio, distribute imitations and preserve the clarity of all three texts. Recitatives connect these planes and should not become pauses.
