Cantate BWV 125 - Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin

About this work

Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin BWV 125 places Simeon’s hymn in a chorale fantasia with a grave sway. The soprano carries the tune above flutes, oboes, strings and lower voices.

An alto aria with flute and oboe d’amore extends this calm. The bass recitative inserts a chorale phrase, then tenor and bass answer each other in an animated duet; an alto recitative leads to the final chorale.

Keep the opening procession supple rather than merely slow. Alto, flute and oboe should build one breath. In the bass recitative, distinguish the chorale quotation from free text; the duet requires a shared pulse.
