About this work
Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott BWV 129 retains five stanzas without paraphrased text. The large opening chorus joins trumpets, timpani, flute, oboes, strings and voices around the hymn carried by the soprano.
The three middle stanzas become in turn a bass aria with continuo, a soprano aria with flute and violin, and an alto aria with oboe d’amore. The final chorale recalls the full festive ensemble.
Prepare the common tune before its changes of colour. In each aria, listen to the instrumental partner rather than the absent ensemble. Reintroduce trumpets carefully in the final chorale so diction remains clear through the cadence.
