Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal begins with an expansive sinfonia led by obbligato organ. The chorus then carries the same concertante world into a verse from Acts about the trials preceding entry into God’s kingdom. Both movements reuse material from the concerto now known in the form BWV 1052.
The remaining numbers turn from that public scale towards a more inward journey: an alto aria with organ, a soprano recitative and aria with flute and oboes d’amore, then a tenor recitative. The tenor-bass duet regains collective energy before a chorale whose text has not survived.
Balance with the organ is the central challenge, for it acts as both soloist and member of the orchestral fabric. Shape the chorus through continuous lines rather than isolated entries. In the arias, lighten the accompaniment so that the obbligato instruments can genuinely answer the words.
