Cantate BWV 147 - Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben

About this work

Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben was performed in Leipzig for the Visitation in 1723, reshaping an earlier Weimar cantata. Its ten movements form two parts intended to surround the sermon. A large chorus opens the work, and two settings of the same chorale tune close the respective halves.

The latter setting, Jesus bleibet meine Freude, became famous on its own. Within the cantata, however, its instrumental sway answers Wohl mir, daß ich Jesum habe from the first part. Between them, recitatives and arias continually change perspective, moving from oboe d’amore to solo violin and then trumpet.

To make the design clear, give the two chorales related articulation and breathing without making them identical. The opening chorus needs firm entries that remain connected to the phrase. In the arias, allow each obbligato instrument to lead an independent line rather than merely doubling the singer.
