Cantate BWV 148 - Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens

About this work

Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens first sets a verse from Psalm 29 in a lively chorus supported by trumpet. The following tenor aria turns the collective summons into an individual race, driven by an exceptionally mobile solo violin.

The cantata changes colour at its centre: an alto recitative with strings leads to Mund und Herze steht dir offen, where three members of the oboe family surround the voice. A brief tenor recitative finally prepares a chorale whose original text has not survived.

In rehearsal, keep the opening chorus dance-like despite the trumpet’s brilliance. Solo violin and tenor should share their points of support instead of chasing the tempo. In the alto aria, balance the three oboe lines as chamber music and leave room around the words.
