About this work
Written for Michaelmas, Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg opens with a chorus of victory scored for three trumpets, timpani, three oboes, bassoon, strings and continuo. Bach reworks the final chorus of the Hunt Cantata BWV 208 for words drawn from Psalm 118.
After that sonority, the bass aria reduces the forces to bassoon and violone, while the soprano aria entrusts its motion to the strings. An alto-tenor duet with bassoon sustains a quieter watchfulness before the chorale Ach Herr, laß dein lieb Engelein.
Rank the attacks in the opening chorus carefully: trumpets should crown the counterpoint rather than cover it. Hear the bassoon as a partner in the bass aria and duet. The final chorale may recover the opening splendour, provided the four vocal lines retain their direction.
