About this work
Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich is an early cantata, probably composed around 1708–1710. Its authorship has long been debated, and some movements are not authenticated as securely as Bach’s Leipzig cantatas. Even so, the surviving score has a strong unity centred on Psalm 25.
A dark sinfonia leads to the first chorus, after which psalm verses alternate with freely written poetry. The forces remain compact—four voices, two violins, bassoon and continuo—until the extended closing chaconne, whose recurring bass supports the chorus’s variations.
Establish continuity in the bass first, especially in the chaconne: it must carry the form without becoming mechanical. The choruses require precise but mobile diction. Retain the same instrumental colour in the solo numbers so that the sequence feels like a journey rather than a set of separate pieces.
