About this work
Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange? is a Weimar cantata first performed in 1716 and revived in Leipzig in 1724. It begins with a soprano recitative accompanied by strings: waiting is stretched through repeated appeals in the text and harmonies that resist immediate resolution.
The duet Du mußt glauben, du mußt hoffen answers that lament with active motion supported by an obbligato bassoon. After the bass recitative offers reassurance, the soprano aria Wirf, mein Herze circulates a confident motif through the strings before the closing chorale.
Do not turn the opening recitative into a slow aria: keep the speech flexible within the sustained chords. In the duet, bassoon, alto and tenor need a shared articulation. The soprano aria may then broaden without spending the stability reserved for the chorale.
