About this work
Komm, du süße Todesstunde belongs to Bach’s Weimar cycle on texts by Salomon Franck. In the opening alto aria, two recorders and organ surround the voice while the tune Herzlich tut mich verlangen appears instrumentally: death is imagined as release rather than a theatrical blow.
A tenor recitative and aria bring more motion to the desire to join Christ. The second alto recitative introduces strings and leads to the cantata’s only free chorus, Wenn es meines Gottes Wille, before the chorale heard beneath the opening is finally sung outright.
In the first aria, make the instrumental chorale perceptible without separating it artificially from the texture. Recitatives need to carry the text’s development rather than act as links. Reserve the broader sonority for the fifth movement, then recover a calm tread in the final chorale.
