About this work
Nur jedem das Seine was first performed in Weimar in 1715, setting a text by Salomon Franck inspired by ‘Render unto Caesar’. The tenor aria passes its motif among the strings like a coin moving from hand to hand, after which the bass recitative turns material tribute into inward self-giving.
In the bass aria Laß mein Herz die Münze sein, two obbligato cellos create a dark, supple texture. The soprano-alto recitative gradually becomes a duet; the following movement unites those voices in Nimm mich mir und gib mich dir over strings in unison.
Bring out the exchanges in the opening aria without hardening attacks. The two cellos in the bass aria should remain independent lines rather than a thick accompaniment. In the duet, direct repeated words through the harmony. Only the bass line of the final chorale survives in the source.
