Cantate BWV 165 - O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad

About this work

O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad is a Weimar cantata for Trinity, first performed in 1715 and revived in Leipzig in 1724. The opening soprano aria sets the image of water in motion through continuously interwoven lines for voice, strings, bassoon and continuo.

Two bass recitatives shape the theological centre. Between them, the alto sings Jesu, der aus großer Liebe over spare accompaniment; after them, the tenor aria Jesu, meines Todes Tod draws both violins into one unison line. The final chorale joins Word, baptism and communion.

In the first aria, avoid breaking the coloratura into fragments: its flow carries the meaning. Bass recitatives need clear articulation even when strings broaden the texture. In the tenor aria, give the unison violins a single direction before returning to the sobriety of the chorale.
