About this work
Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe was first performed for St John the Baptist’s Day in 1724. It begins with a tenor aria rather than a chorus: strings support a supple song of praise before an alto recitative quotes the Benedictus, Gelobet sei der Herr Gott Israel.
The soprano-alto duet Gottes Wort, das trüget nicht gives an obbligato role to the oboe da caccia. After the bass recitative, Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren goes beyond a plain chorale setting: clarino, oboe and strings weave concertante lines around the four voices.
Keep the opening aria’s dance-like mobility without rushing the tenor. In the duet, the oboe da caccia should connect rather than compete with both voices. Prepare the final chorale as the cantata’s summit: place text and vocal cadences first, then add the instrumental activity.
