Cantate BWV 168 - Tue Rechnung! Donnerwort

About this work

Tue Rechnung! Donnerwort was first performed in Leipzig on 29 July 1725 for the Ninth Sunday after Trinity. The opening bass aria turns the image of rendering an account into a judgement scene: strings hammer out their figures while the voice delivers the title as a summons.

The tenor recitative and aria shift the language of money towards spiritual responsibility. Two oboes d’amore then play in unison above the continuo. After a brief bass recitative, the soprano-alto duet Herz, zerreiß des Mammons Kette dispenses with the orchestra and concentrates attention on two voices and bass line.

Keep the opening aria’s attacks clear without weighing down every beat. The tenor needs to articulate the financial imagery while sustaining the oboes’ long line. In the duet, establish the continuo pulse before aligning vocal imitations; let the final chorale provide stability without an excessive slowing.
