Cantate BWV 172 - Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget, ihr Saiten !
About this work
Erschallet, ihr Lieder was first performed in Weimar for Pentecost in 1714 and revived several times. The opening chorus sets three trumpets and timpani above the strings, before the bass sings Christ’s words in a very spare recitative: the cantata immediately moves from public celebration to inward listening.
The bass aria invokes the Trinity with trumpets, then the tenor unfolds a more fluid line over unison strings. The fifth movement brings together the soprano as the Soul and the alto as the Holy Spirit around oboe d’amore and obbligato cello. A chorale leads back to the opening chorus.
In the first chorus, articulate coloratura from the words rather than from instrumental brilliance alone. The duet requires two distinct characters sharing one breath. Prepare the final reprise through the chorale: it should complete the journey rather than simply repeat the first page.
