About this work
The correct title is Ich liebe den Höchsten von ganzem Gemüte. First performed for Pentecost in 1729 to a text by Picander, the cantata opens with a sinfonia drawn from the first movement of the Third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach greatly enlarges its orchestra with hunting horns, oboes and taille around the concertante string groups.
After ten instrumental pages, the alto aria abruptly narrows the space around two oboes. The tenor recitative is accompanied by groups of three violins and three violas in unison; the bass aria Greifet zu similarly unites the strings before the chorale Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr.
In the sinfonia, make the three string groups clear before adding the winds: breadth comes from the circulation of motifs, not volume alone. Both arias then need a more direct texture and firm diction. Let the chorale retain the accumulated momentum rather than become a weighty coda.
