About this work
Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele was first performed in October 1724 and is based on Johann Franck’s eucharistic hymn. The opening chorus moves like a measured dance: recorders, oboe, taille and strings surround the chorale melody in the soprano without turning the invitation to the feast into a solemn march.
The tenor aria Ermuntre dich gives a highly mobile line to transverse flute. The soprano recitative then introduces a chorale stanza above a virtuoso piccolo cello. After an alto recitative with recorders, the soprano aria Lebens Sonne reunites the full orchestra before the bass recitative and chorale.
In the opening chorus, let the dance phrases breathe while sustaining the cantus firmus. Transverse flute and tenor should share a light articulation. The soprano recitative needs precise balance: keep the piccolo cello expressive and clear without drawing attention away from the chorale text.
