Cantate BWV 181 - Leichtgesinnte Flattergeister

About this work

Leichtgesinnte Flattergeister is a cantata on the parable of the sower, first performed in February 1724 for Sexagesima Sunday. The opening bass aria depicts flighty spirits letting the Word escape through rapid, unstable figures in the strings. Two recitatives then frame the tenor aria about thorns choking the seed.

The solo-violin part of that tenor aria is incompletely transmitted, so any restoration of its line is editorial. The final chorus Laß, Höchster, uns zu allen Zeiten, drawn from a lost model, suddenly broadens the forces with trumpet.

In the first aria, make the agitation precise without allowing the pulse to scatter. In the tenor aria, identify reconstructed passages clearly and do not treat them as certain autograph text. The final chorus needs firm entries and a trumpet integrated into the polyphony rather than placed above it.
