Cantate BWV 183 - Sie werden euch in den Bann tun

About this work

No musical material connects this cantata with BWV 44, despite their shared opening words. Written to a text by Christiane Mariane von Ziegler, it was first performed for Exaudi Sunday in 1725. The bass begins with St John’s verse in a recitative surrounded by two oboes d’amore and two oboes da caccia.

The tenor aria Ich fürchte nicht des Todes Schrecken gives the piccolo cello an agile line that contradicts the fear named in the text. The alto recitative unites all four oboes with strings, then Höchster Tröster makes the two oboes da caccia partners in the soprano’s prayer to the Holy Spirit before the chorale.

Keep the opening recitative close to speech despite its exceptional instrumental colour. In the tenor aria, align piccolo-cello articulation with the vocal coloratura. The soprano aria needs a dark but supple sound from the low oboes without covering consonants.
