About this work
Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied was first performed in Leipzig on 1 January 1724. The opening chorus combines Psalm 149 with a New Year celebration for three trumpets, timpani, oboes, strings and choir. Its music, like that of the following movement, survives only incompletely and must be completed editorially.
The second movement combines Luther’s German Te Deum with recited interventions. The alto aria Lobe, Zion, deinen Gott then lightens the texture around the strings, before a bass reflects on worldly wishes. A tenor-bass duet with oboe d’amore precedes a final recitative and the chorale Laß uns das Jahr vollbringen.
In the first two movements, identify what belongs to the source and what comes from reconstruction before setting balances. The opening chorus needs a firm pulse, but trumpets must not cover the vocal entries. In the duet, articulate the vocal and oboe d’amore motifs together, then preserve a confident pace in the final chorale.
