Cantate BWV 192 - Nun danket alle Gott

About this work

Nun danket alle Gott sets all three stanzas of Martin Rinckart’s hymn without added recitative. The cantata probably dates from 1730, perhaps for the Reformation festival. Two large choral movements frame a soprano-bass duet, giving the work a concise and perfectly symmetrical form.

In the first verse, two transverse flutes, two oboes, strings and continuo surround the four voices. The duet Der ewig reiche Gott reduces the forces to the two soloists and strings, before the third verse restores the collective sonority. The original tenor part in both choruses is lost and has been reconstructed.

Begin choral rehearsal by isolating the hymn and bass line, then make the instrumental parts clear around them. Treat the tenor line as an editorial reconstruction rather than certain autograph text. In the duet, soprano and bass should share articulation and breath without weighing down the dance motion.
