Cantate BWV 199 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut

About this work

Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut is a solo soprano cantata, probably composed in Weimar in 1713 and revived several times with altered forces. Georg Christian Lehms’s text follows a carefully shaped path: confession of guilt opens the work, then prayer and chorale gradually lead towards consolation.

The eight movements alternate recitatives and arias without a chorus. In Stumme Seufzer, stille Klagen, the oboe extends the voice’s lament above the continuo. The chorale Ich, dein betrübtes Kind gives its melody to the soprano while an obbligato viola develops an independent line; the final aria reunites oboe and strings in newly mobile joy.

The soprano must keep the words intelligible in recitative without breaking harmonic continuity. With the oboe, align attacks and phrase endings rather than seeking uniform pathos. In the chorale, let the stable melody and moving viola line be heard together; reserve a freer, brighter articulation for the final aria.
