Sonate en Sol mineur BWV 1020

About this work

The Sonata in G minor BWV 1020 was long attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach; current catalogues generally associate it with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach as H.542.5. Two Allegros frame an Adagio and set a high melodic part against a fully active keyboard.

In the first movement, short motifs and replies pass rapidly between the players. The Adagio allows the flute to unfold an ornamented line above widely spaced chords, before the final Allegro restores lively imitation requiring shared articulation.

First rehearse from the score to identify handovers, then use the separate parts. The keyboard should not become mere harmonic background: balance its own voices against the flute, and agree together on ornamentation and breathing in the Adagio.
