The so-called ‘Dorian’ Toccata builds its motion through exchanges between groups, registers and manuals. Directions to change manual are not decorative: they make responses perceptible and give relief to relentlessly active writing. The pedals maintain momentum without needing to cover the upper articulations.
The Fugue adopts a different kind of concentration. Its subject enters in the various voices, combines with close counterpoint and returns among episodes that move the harmony. Gravity comes from this controlled accumulation, not from systematic slowing or an invariably thick registration.
