Concerto pour violon en Ré majeur Op. 61 - 1 : Allegro ma non troppo
About this work
Four timpani strokes open the Violin Concerto and become a reference point throughout the movement. The orchestra then unfolds an extensive exposition; the soloist enters with restraint, as though joining music already in progress rather than conquering it through a spectacular gesture.
The violin transforms motifs through bow length, changes of register and ornaments. Its virtuosity remains connected to song. Listen also for returns of the timpani figure and woodwind handovers: they maintain unity during the solo’s broad expansions.
When practising the solo part, first build the line without automatic vibrato or accents on every high point. In the orchestra, retain a supple pulse beneath long sustained notes. Transitions towards the cadenza need to preserve tension without making the tempo heavy.
