The Fidelio Overture belongs to the opera’s definitive 1814 version. More compact than the Leonore overtures, it does not retell the whole action: a few chords establish the frame, then the Allegro moves forward with directly theatrical energy.

Contrasts arise from the circulation of motifs between strings and woodwinds as much as from volume. Locate returns of the same cell and the way basses sustain the pulse beneath silences; momentum often depends on what remains tense between two attacks.

In rehearsal, establish the length of short notes and the ends of crescendos first. Tuttis will gain force when inner layers remain audible. Keep some reserve of tempo and dynamics for the coda, whose acceleration must remain articulated.
