Concerto n°2 pour piano en Si b majeur Op. 83 - 1 : Allegro non troppo

About this work

Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto begins with a horn call answered by what sounds like a piano improvisation. This unforced opening defines the Allegro non troppo: soloist and orchestra share themes, interrupt one another and recover the direction together. Written between 1878 and 1881, the concerto expands to four movements without casting the piano as the ensemble’s permanent opponent.

The cadenza near the threshold needs freedom, yet it must still lead into the orchestral exposition. Later chords, arpeggios and octaves belong inside a web of bass lines and counter-voices. The conductor should clarify each transfer of the motif, allowing the pianist to vary attack and dynamic instead of fighting every tutti.

Begin by rehearsing the horn call, piano answer and their join without the rest of the orchestra. Then map the thematic returns across all forty-two pages. Group keyboard passagework by harmony and preserve pulse beneath local relaxations of tempo. The movement’s scale comes from that continuity, not from uniform volume.
