Danse hongroise n°04 en Fa mineur (4 mains)

About this work

The fourth Hungarian Dance refuses to choose between reverie and motion. Its Poco sostenuto in F minor proceeds molto espressivo, with connected lines and long harmonic supports. An in tempo animato gradually tightens the gesture before the Vivace at bar 33 turns the same tension into a far more assertive step.

After the Fine placed at the end of the Vivace, a Molto Allegro opens a third, lighter and more insistent section. The final Da capo sin’al Fine sends both players back to the beginning and stops them at the marked point. The 110 written bars therefore do not form one continuous route: the complete design depends on this return, repeats and numerous ritardandos.

Map the route in both parts and rehearse the jump from Da capo to Fine. In Poco sostenuto, let the primo guide expressive lines while the secondo supports without thickening them. Share accents rather than doubling their weight in the Vivace. Keep the Molto Allegro very light and retain enough reserve for the opening material to recover its depth without an abrupt change of touch.
