About this work
The seventeenth Hungarian Dance opens Andantino in F-sharp minor with expressive restraint. The primo carries a flexible line above discreet chords while the secondo provides harmonic ground and takes up several fragments. This introduction lasts about thirty bars before a Vivace abruptly changes the scale of motion.
Vivace thickens the chords and multiplies exchanges. At bar 59, Meno presto, grazioso e molto dolce opens a third, more connected and calmer space before Vivace returns to complete the 112 bars. Across eight pages, transitions require secure reading: the same motif can change part, register and character within moments.
Practise each section with a related pulse and mark the two principal joins. Listen to the bass before adding pedal in Andantino. Prepare chords together and keep runs close to the keys in Vivace. Meno presto should become softer without sagging. At the final return, recover the Vivace’s clarity rather than adding more power.
