About this work
The nineteenth Hungarian Dance begins Allegretto in B minor with accents that constantly shift its centre of gravity. The primo combines ornaments, repeated notes and short descents while the secondo supports them with basses and chords often placed off the beat. Sostenuto un poco followed by in tempo creates a flexible sway within a highly exact phrase structure.
At bar 25 Più presto tightens the writing and introduces drier chords. Allegretto then returns with its opening motif before a renewed drive towards the close. Its 65 bars use repeats and alternative endings; misreading these signs can separate the duet faster than a difficult run.
Mark repeats in both parts and state their direction during rehearsal. In Allegretto, rank accents so that some relaunch the phrase while others remain secondary. Keep hands close to the keys and shorten bass notes in Più presto. Prepare the return to the first tempo from the alternative ending, recovering the sway before the volume.
