Symphonie n°3 en Fa majeur Op. 90 - 2 : Andante

About this work

The Andante of Brahms’s Third Symphony begins without display. Clarinets and bassoons state an even phrase that the strings soon extend. Brahms creates weight from spare material and restrained dynamics. Silences, repeated notes and woodwind replies give the melody a shared breath; the sense of calm comes from balance, not from continually slowing the tempo.

The movement proceeds through quiet transformations. A chord darkens, a bass line changes course, or an inner voice unexpectedly reaches the foreground. Players therefore need to listen beyond their own part. When the strings accompany, their articulation must leave room for the woodwind timbre. When they inherit the motif, they should preserve its simplicity and long phrasing.

Begin rehearsal at a moderate dynamic and without excessive vibrato so that tuning inside each chord can settle. Then identify the harmonic points that require more bow or breath. Cadences should not become full stops: maintain an inner pulse through every silence. That continuity reveals the compact shape of this eleven-page Andante.
