The Poco allegretto gives its opening melody to the cellos, set within a three-beat sway that is neither march nor waltz. It has become the Third Symphony’s best-known page, yet its effect depends as much on the accompaniment as on the theme. Pizzicatos, held wind notes and inner replies create a flexible pulse beneath a phrase poised somewhere between confidence and recollection.

At each return Brahms changes the lighting rather than the melody itself. Horn, woodwinds and strings alter the timbre and dynamic, while a few bass notes can transform the harmony. Excessive rubato blurs those details. Let the harmonic points breathe while preserving the underlying motion of all three beats.

Rehearse the melody first with bass alone, then add one counter-line at a time. Cellos can sustain legato without stressing every bow change. Accompanying sections should place attacks together and immediately release the weight. Keep the final cadence plain and controlled: restraint gives the following silence far more presence.
