Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2 unfolds an exceptionally long melody in D-flat major above regular arpeggios. Its Lento sostenuto in 6/8 leaves generous space between points of support, yet the phrase must not become stationary. Sustained notes, suspensions and resolutions form one trajectory, while changes of bass in the left hand support that direction without moving into the foreground.

The upper line becomes more decorated at every return. Rapid runs, irregular groups, repeated notes and arabesques enter the same pulse before a broad climax marked first con forza and then appassionato. Opening material subsequently returns at quieter dynamics and leads to the final calando. Ornaments are not virtuoso interruptions: each extends an expressive note and needs to find the following one naturally.

First reduce the piece to its melody and the bass note of each harmony. Once that framework can breathe, add quiet arpeggios and then the ornaments, identifying their exact starting and arrival notes. Keep the background 6/8 pulse through irregular groups instead of giving equal weight to every small note. Pedal should follow bass changes; at the climax, increase intensity through depth of sound without allowing the running figures to accelerate.
