About this work
The first book of Études isolates several piano gestures and turns them into musical material. Each piece poses a different question of touch, interval or movement; no single method suits the entire collection.
Before repeating, name the gesture actually being practised and reduce the passage to its stresses. This analysis distinguishes a coordination difficulty from a mere note problem and helps select a relevant exercise.
Always retain a line, a bass and a dynamic. Debussy does not separate technique from timbre: a passage is mastered when its character remains audible at the chosen tempo.
