This G-major Fugue in 4/4 states its subject in the first bar and then introduces it successively in other voices. The figure combines stepwise motion, a leap and a return in quavers; it should remain recognisable as it moves from the upper register to the bass. Moderato suits this density, allowing the polyphony to speak without making every note a separate event.

As entries draw closer together, sustained notes cross the moving figures and alter the balance between the hands. The bass does more than support chords: it takes up the material and directs several transitions. Inner voices require particular care when they share a stave or pass below another line. The final cadence gradually gathers the texture before the fermata.
