About this work
Quartet K. 387 opens a particularly dense phase of Mozart’s quartet writing. The Allegro vivace assai circulates short motifs among all four instruments, with accents that repeatedly shift the listener’s sense of metre. The first violin remains a driving force, but the inner parts take a full share in the argument.
The Menuetto comes second and sets its firm stresses against a more connected trio. An Andante cantabile then unfolds long shared phrases, while the closing Molto Allegro builds its energy through imitative entries and increasingly close counterpoint.
Practise each motif without a fixed hierarchy before rebuilding the tonal layers. In the Menuetto, make displaced accents precise without weighing down the first beat. For the finale, rehearse entries in pairs of instruments, then combine all four parts while preserving the articulation of every line.
